Lusted, MD SAGE Publications, Inc.1991DOI: 10.1177/0272989X9101100208 Kathryn Pyle Krages AMLS, MA DU Yuefen MPH J. Robert Beck MD The publications of Lee B. Lusted, MD, span five decades. From his works written for the Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II to "The Clearing 'Haze': A View from My Window," published in this issue of Medical Decision Making, Lusted has authored four books and 135 papers, editorials, book chapters, and letters to the editor. Although Lusted has made significant contributions to the field of radiology, the present paper examines some of his influential works in the field of medical decision making. The review begins with the 1959 paper by R. S. Ledley and L. B. Lusted in Science; "Reasoning Foundations of Medical Diagnosis." From Lusted's bibliography, 20 papers and books published between 1959 and 1977 were selected as those most relevant to the field of medical decision making (table 1). Papers that cite these works by Lusted were identified using Science Citation Index for the time period 1965-1973 and using ScisearchT", Science Citation Index online, for 1974 to 1989. Citation information was unavailable for the years prior to 1965. The numbers of citations for each of the 20 Lusted papers ranged from zero to 331 (table 2). Lusted's 1968 book, Introduction to Medical Decision Making, has been widely quoted, generating 331 citations between its time of publication and 1989. Many citations have used this reference as an archival source, bypassing earlier works by Lusted and others. The 1959 Science paper has also been frequently cited, generating at least four citations each year since 1961, when Science Citation Index began. From 1965 to 1989 there were 185 citations. This article introduces logic, Bayesian reasoning, and game theory and applies them to medical problems. Other Lusted papers that have had major influence include the 1971 New England Journal of Medicine article, "Decision-making Studies in Patient Management," with 113 citations in 19 years, and the 1974 Radiology paper, "Radiographic Received from the Biomedical Information Communication Center, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon, (KPK, JRB) and the Department of Health Statistics, Tongji Medical University, Wuhan, People's Republic of China (DYI. Supported by contract LM95316 and Research Career Development Award LM00086 from the National Library of Medicine. laNe 1 9 Twenty Papers by Lee B. Lusted, MD, of Relevance to Medical Decision Making Application of Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves," with 102 citations in 16 years. Both papers deal with the use of ROC curves in clinical medicine, 47117 Table 2 . Numbers of Citations of the 20 Lusted Papers Listed in Table 1 from 1965 through 1989 although the 1971 article also reviews algorithms and clinical prediction rules. A cocitation analysis was conducted to determine interrelationships among the Lusted papers. Cocitation analysis can reveal the importance and strength of two primary documents.' A search among the Lusted papers revealed 47 pairs of articles cited together. Of these, four pairs of paper were cited together more than ten times. The two papers most frequently cited together (18 times) were the 1972 and the 1974 Radiology papers by Goodenough, Rossman, and Lusted. The 1959 Science paper and the 1968 book were cited together 15 times. Lusted's medical decision making book and the 1971 New England Journal of Medicine paper on decision-making studies in patient management had 14 cocitations, while the book and the 1974 Radiology paper had 13. FIGURL 1. Solid lines group clusters of frequently cocited papers by L.usted. The dotted line groups a cluster of less frequently cocited papers. See text for explanation. FIGURE 2. This citation tree shows authors in medical decision making whose work stems from Lusted's papers. The cocitation analysis shows tight clusters between three groups of Lusted papers (fig. 1). One cluster consists of the book Introduction to Medical Decision Making and the 1974 Radiology paper, "Radiographic Application of Receiver Operating Characteristic Curves" (L- Q on fig. 1). Most of these cocitations are by articles in imaging or radiology. Another cluster is the foundational paper in Science (1959), the 1971 New England Journal of Medicine paper on decision-making studies in patient management, and the medical decision making book (B-L-M, fig. 1). These articles are most often cited together in the clinical decision science literature. A third cluster involves three papers published in Radiology in 1972, 1974, and 1976 (N-Q-S). A fourth radiology paper by Goodenough, Rossman, and Lusted, (Invest Radiol, 1973, shown as P in fig. 1) 48118 clusters with both the Radiology 1972 and the Radiology 1974 articles. Finally, all seven articles comprise a large cluster of Lusted's most influential works. A tree was created showing the influence of Lusted's work on others in the field of medical decision making (fig. 2). In this figure, Lusted cociters in medical decision making are shown connected to the earliest articles they cite. The trunk of the tree contains Lust- ed's papers; the branches represent citing authors. Although not exact, the "computer-aided diagnosis" stream of scholarship descends from the earliest articles, while the "clinical decision making" work is principally connected to the 1971 paper.1 In the early 1980s, Lee Lusted encouraged a citation analysis of medical decision making, at least in part because of his interest in the history of science and this field in particular. His work has figured prominently in the development of medical decision making, the founding of the Society for Medical Decision Making, and the inauguration of this journal. As we have shown, Dr. Lusted's influence may also be recognized in the cluster of groundbreaking articles he has authored and by the academic descendants he has sired.
