A novel chitosan dressing. Hemostatic efficacy in acute swine injury models: Splenic stripping compared to carotid laceration

Abstract

Hemostatic efficacy of different forms of chitosan dressing in acute swine injury models were analyzed. Chitosan material forms consisted of powders, gels films and sponges were initially tested in a swine spleen laceration model where 30 second applications with digital pressure were used, followed by a 2 minutes period of observation for bleeding. The best performing chitosan form were compared against Gelfoam™+thrombin in an anti-coagulated swine spleen capsular stripping and carotid laceration model. It was observed that in the laceration model, chitosan as a powder, film and gel had no better efficacy than the negative control, whereas the sponge form showed equivalent performance to Gelfoam™+thrombin.
