Abstract

Pulse oximetry is a simple and convenient method for estimating arterial oxygen saturation but may yield misleading information about Hb oxygen saturation in certain clinical circumstances, including dyshemoglobinemias. When the reported SpO2 is inappropriately low given the measured PaO2, cooximetry should be performed to evaluate for the possibility of methemoglobinemia.
