Endovascular embolization of AVMs represents a significant advancement in the overall efficacy of AVM treatment. Embolization has the potential to decrease surgical morbidity and mortality, transform untreatable AVMs into treatable ones, secure high-risk AVM features, and in some cases result in cure of the AVM by endovascular therapy alone. Currently, there are many devices and techniques available for endovascular treatment of AVMs: these advancements have made treatment simpler and more effective. While the potential for benefit to the patient may be great, the risks and complications of treatment need to be carefully considered and anticipated.
