Abstract

Chronic venous disease (CVD) is highly prevalent and therefore a focus of ongoing research into basic mechanisms of disease and outcomes of clinical care. Methods of classifying and documenting patients’ severity of chronic venous disease are essential to facilitate communication in research and clinical care. Classification systems for CVD standardize categories of disease and thereby facilitate scientific reporting of the characteristics of research cohorts as well as outcomes and assessment of patient oriented outcomes such as quality of life. Methods and techniques to document wound dimensions and features capture relevant information to track wounds over time to provide objective documentation of effectiveness of therapies. The purpose of this chapter therefore is to provide a single source that summarizes assessment and outcome tools for CVD and venous ulcers that are useful for both research and clinical care of CVD patients.
