Abstract
A computer program was developed to assist in the identification of dextrose fermenting gram negative rods isolated from clinical specimens. The program accepts as input the results of any size subgroup of the 38 tests most frequently used to identify these organisms. It then uses a Baysean formula to select the most likely identification. The program lists all test results that are against this diagnosis, as well as any additional tests that would assist in further differentiating the unknown. In clinical trials, the program correctly identified the unknown isolated in more than 99% of the cases.
