Abstract

An increasing body of work has informed our understanding of the gut microbiome and its role in acute and chronic disease. This has sparked new interest in the contribution of the gastrointestinal system to health and disease. This chapter will discuss the extensive communication that exists between the brain, the gut, and the microbiome and will explore how this communication can influence not only gut pathology but also the reaction to acute brain injury and the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
