N2 - There is poor correlation between daytime complaints of patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and visual scoring of sleep disruption. The cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) introduces new information on non-rapid eye movement sleep disturbances. This article describes development of an automatic scoring system for CAP based on one central electroencephalograph lead. Members of the CAP Consensus Group tested the automatic analytical program. The different steps of the validation of the program, and Mutual Agreement findings between different scorers performing visual scoring and automatic scoring, are summarized. CAP is an important adjunct in the investigation of sleep disturbance in SDB patients.
