Abstract
The D3 dopamine receptor is activated by the catecholamine dopamine and is a member of the rhodopsin-like 7-transmembrane superfamily of receptors. D3 receptors belong to the D2-like dopamine receptor subfamily, which consists of the D2, D3 and D4 receptors. D3 receptors are found both post- and pre-synaptically in the nervous system and couple to heterotrimeric Gi/o proteins to inhibit adenylate cyclase and/or regulate calcium and potassium channel activity. The D3 receptor, along with the D4 receptor, is less abundant in comparison to the D2 receptor within this subfamily.
