Abstract
Depression may be a risk factor, prodrome, correlate or outcome of dementia. Proposed pathways linking depression with dementia include vascular disease, hippocampal atrophy, and proinflammatory changes. Depression is neither a normal nor expected development in old age, but the prevalence increases with increasing burden of medical illness in the older patient. New depression in old age often portends development of dementia.
