Abstract

Case reports suggest that divalproex and/or other forms of valproate may be useful for older patients with affective symptoms and for persons who are agitated because of dementia. Nonetheless, little is known about the use of divalproex by nursing home residents. This retrospective study describes valproate use and outcomes thereof in the long-term-care population. Data sources included Medicaid claims for 14,802 Oregon nursing home residents during the years 1991 through 1994.
