Abstract

Measurement of closing volumes has proved to be a sensitive technique for detecting the early lung function changes found in cigarette smokers. The sensitivity of this test is considerably greater than that of conventional spirometric tests. Widespread use of this test, however, should probably await standardization of the procedure and further understanding of the implications of abnormal test results.
