Effect of bone viscoelasticity on protocols for indentation tests

A study was performed to investigate the effect of viscoelasticity on indentation test protocols. Rockwell superficial hardness tests were conducted on specimens of cancellous bone using the HR5Y protocol. Viscoelastic effects were present in indentation tests of both wet and dry bone. However, the creep responses between wet and dry bone was statistically different. Further, there was only a moderate correlative strength between the indentation depths obtained from testing the same specimens in both the wet and dry condition.
