Abstract
Given the challenges in management of elderly surgical patients, it is clear that during a surgeon’s career he/she will encounter many patients with end-of-life needs. However, there is much evidence that quality of care at the end of life as perceived by patients and their families suffers. An understanding of issues involving palliative care and the ethical management of patients and their families is necessary to improve the care of the dying patient.
