Abstract

Extraarticular manifestations (EAMs) associated with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) include conditions involving the skin, eye, gastrointestinal, and cardiorespiratory systems. Epidemiologic studies report their prevalence to be higher in patients with axSpA, as compared with the general population: acute anterior uveitis in 10%-40%, inflammatory bowel disease in 5%-10%, and psoriasis in 5%-10% of axSpA patients. They have a major impact on the management of axSpA and require a multispecialty approach. Moreover, their presence increases the disease burden on patients and society. Better knowledge of critical pathogenic pathways of axSpA and its EAMs could pave the road for future therapeutic approaches.
