Abstract

The number of adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD) is growing and this growing population is aging. The incidence of heart failure (HF) increases with age and constitutes the most common cause of death in these patients. Some adults with CHD present with typical findings for HF, while others exhibit disease-specific manifestations. As such, it is not a trivial task to define exactly what constitutes HF in adults with CHD. This challenge, along with the marked heterogeneity in both underlying disease and management, has served to limit progress in understanding the epidemiology or optimal treatment. This chapter reviews the current understanding of HF in adults with CHD, with specific comment on diagnoses most strongly associated with premature HF.
