Abstract

Archival data were collected on all articles published during 1988 across five targeted journals. Analyses revealed that receiving manuscript help in the form of feedback from peers was related to article quality, as measured by citations reported in the Social Science Citation Index over the five years following 1988. Receiving administrative help in the form of help with data collection, however, was unrelated to quantity, as measured by the number of articles published in the comparable five years following 1988. These results were found after controlling for several variables. Of the control variables, the number of publications in the five years prior to 1988 was the variable most consistently related to publishing quality and quantity.
