Abstract

Our appreciation of the complexity of tumor biology has led us from considering tumors as autonomous masses of mutant cells to an awareness of the insidious nature of tumors as entities that can hijack and exploit various normal physiologic processes of the host. In this article, we will explore the recent developments in our understanding of how the immune system, extracellular matrix metabolism, interactions with fibroblasts and angiogenesis affect tumor development.
