Abstract

Substance use disorders are a global phenomenon that significantly negatively impacts societal health and results in elevated socioeconomic costs. Establishing prevalence data, tracking changes over time, and determining factors that place people at risk for substance use and addiction are important to developing effective preventative strategies. These objective data are made available through epidemiological studies, largely population-based, and can be observational, prospective, or case-control in design. Herein is a discussion of the data collection and analytical strategies used in epidemiological research on substance use.
