Minicomputer applications in nervous system toxicology investigations

This paper describes various applications of a small general purpose, digital computer in a laboratory engaged in investigations of effects of toxic agents on the nervous system and suggests development of reference procedures utilizing such computers. The applications discussed include analyses of biological signals such as EEG's and ECG's, together with computer control and evaluation of programmed complex behaviors in laboratory animals. Examples of these applications are given. Recommendations for standardized computer systems in laboratories pursuing similar investigations are suggested in order to minimize duplication of effort in computer programming and to facilitate the interchange of programs for data processing and behavioral control.
