note = "Funding Information: The future of endoscopic research depends on providing training and resources for investigators. Panelists presented information regarding funding opportunities through the American Digestive Health Foundation and the NIDDK. The NIH has recently instituted two new award mechanisms to enhance clinical research. The K24, also known as the mid-career investigators award in patient-oriented research, provides support for experienced clinical investigators to perform research and mentor young investigators. The target candidates are individuals with proven track records of clinical research who are within 15 years of completion of their specialty training. The other new award is the K23 award, designed to support new faculty who wish to develop careers in patient-oriented research. The NIDDK is encouraging submission of small grants (RO3) as another mechanism of enhancing clinical investigation. These small grants may be used as planning grants or clinical trial pilot studies which could lead to full-scale multicenter clinical trials. ",
