Abstract
In order for children to experience optimal oral health, they must have high-quality nutrition. Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCNs) possess complex medical and behavioral conditions and associated treatments that add significant oral and systemic health challenges. Evidence of these challenges is often evident in the child’s dentition and/or periodontium. Dental providers caring for CSHCN must be prepared to recognize the potential limitations and specific requirements associated with the child’s medications, limited diets, and individualized feeding approaches. As a member of the child’s healthcare team, the dental provider can help the child to maintain optimal oral health.
