Abstract

To the Editor: Dawson and Dingman, in a letter to this journal,1 reported that of nine patients receiving Bragg-peak heavy-particle irradiation to pituitary tumors, serious neurologic complications, including cranial-nerve palsy, chiasmatic injury, seizures and vertigo, developed in eight. Four of the eight patients with neurologic complications received prior conventional or high-voltage X-irradiation. A personal communication from Dawson and Dingman indicates that the longest interval between heavy-particle irradiation and the onset of neurologic deficit was 14 months. We have followed three similar patients, in all of whom neurologic complications developed. M.G., a 42-year-old woman with acromegaly since 1959, received 4500 R.
