Abstract
E. H. Matthei (see record 1983-31857-001) has suggested that the length dependence of the word advantage over single letters reported by the present authors (see record 1982-25573-001) might be due to a confounding of length with lexical class. An item analysis is presented that separates word length and lexical class. The analysis indicates that word length, rather than lexical class, accounts for the word advantage.
