N2 - The faecal excretion of bile acids, neutral sterols and total fats were measured in 13 hyperlipaemic outpatients (7 type II A or B, and 6 type IV), and in 1 normal subject during 15- or 30-days' treatment with 3.0 gm daily of diethylaminoethyldextran (Dexide). After 15 days, the faecal excretion of neutral sterols, bile acids and total fats showed a significant increase (59, 87 and 170% respectively). In eight patients, whose drug treatment lasted 30 days, a further although non-significant increase was recorded as compared to 15-day values. This effect appeared to be more pronounced in type IV patients. In type II patients the faecal fat excretion showed a gradual increase after 15 and 30 days respectively, whereas in type IV patients the peak value was reached by the end of the first 15-day period and remained unchanged thereafter. In both types of hyperlipoproteinaemia the percentage increase of total fatty acid excretion appeared to be higher than that of neutral and acid sterols.
