Abstract
Sleep problems are reported by over 50% of individuals aged 65 and older. While disorders such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and insomnia are more prevalent in the elderly, comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions and the medication used to treat these conditions also disrupt sleep. Furthermore, the consequences of sleep disruption, such as daytime sleepiness, impairment in cognitive function, and increased falls, may have a greater impact on quality of life, morbidity, and mortality and therefore require thorough investigation and treatment.
