Abstract

For the study and control of particulate pollution, the nature and sources of particulate matter need to be understood. The control strategies in the past have been based on Emission Inventories (EI) which do not include chemical characterization, secondary and fugitive emissions, and source fluctuations. Physical and chemical characterization of ambient particulate matter has been carried out for a number of years; however, source apportionment using this information is relatively new. Receptor models have been evaluated and applied for source apportionment over the past ten years. This paper reports on a study to evaluate the applicability of chemical elemental balance (CEB), multiple linear regression (MLR) and chemical species specific emission inventory (EI), to quantify sources of carbon in the Portland, Oregon airshed.
