N1 - Funding Information:
The John A. Hartford Foundation Board of Trustees has responded effectively to this need. The creation of the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Initiative, which includes the Building Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholars and Fellows Award Program and the five Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE or Center) are examples of this effort. Since their inception in 2001, the HCGNEs have served as the cornerstone for successful, high-level educational and recruitment programs designed to enhance the efforts of schools of nursing across the country. Through the coordination of funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Academy of Nursing, the BAGNC Scholars and Fellows Program has also fueled increasing interest in academic geriatric nursing. In this article, the authors describe successful strategies in the recruitment and retention of students into HCGNE geriatric nursing programs. The nurse graduates of these programs will provide specialized clinical care and the leadership necessary to fill the void of nursing faculty knowledgeable in geriatric nursing.

N2 - The overall goal of the John A. Hartford Foundation Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (HCGNE or Center) program is to build academic geriatric nursing capacity. Thus, a key component of the program is to increase enrollment into geriatric nursing programs at the master's and doctoral levels. The Centers successfully utilized a variety of recruitment strategies targeting prospective students who expressed an interest in geriatric nursing. These included exemplary use of media resources; participation in local, regional, and national recruiting events; establishing and maintaining personal contact with prospective students; garnering financial support; and curricular enhancements including new course/program offerings designed to meet specific needs. The aggregate outcome of the HCGNE student recruitment activities has been to enlist large cohorts of motivated and gifted students into graduate programs in geriatric nursing.
