Abstract

Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) with high-order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode profiles, are superresolved for optical data storage spots up to 50% smaller than the classical diffraction limit of equivalent fundamental Gaussian modes with better than 10:1 signal to noise ratio between main and side lobe intensities. LG mode profiles are attained using a post-fabrication, post-packaging annealing process, demonstrated to be repeatable within a given batch, on proton-implant midsize aperture VCSEL. Superresolution, or manipulation of the input beam profile, is used to decrease the size of the spot on the disk surface to below its classical diffraction limit.
