Surgical management in children

Sinusitis is a common disease process in children; however, it is rare when it becomes chronic or requires surgery. Factors that lead to the development of surgical therapy include obstruction of the sinuses related to anatomic abnormalities or bacterial contamination through adenoid tissue present in the nasopharanx. Response to surgery can be predicted based on the amount of disease evident on the CT scan, which also dictates the type of procedure to be performed. Special circumstances, such as cystic fibrosis and immunodeficiency, require special planning and surgical treatment.
