To the Editor: The article by Janssen et al. (Aug. 13 issue)1 is a welcome addition to the growing debate over the counseling and testing of hospitalized patients for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The authors, however, make two assumptions that bias their findings in favor of the testing strategy they outline, and they omit two analyses that are indispensable if the overall effect of this program on public health is to be evaluated.
