N2 - The problem of artifacts in the filter sampling of organic aerosol is not well-understood. Such artifacts can be associated with the adsorption of organic vapors on filter media (e. g. , Cadle et al, 1983), volatilization of collected organic aerosol (e. g. , Cadle et al, 1983), volatilization of collected organic aerosol (e. g. , Van Vaeck et al, 1984), and chemical reactions of other atmospheric constituents such as NO//x with collected organic aerosol (e. g. , Pitts et al, 1978). Important variables include: sampling, duration, filter face velocity, and chemical composition of organic vapors and particles. This paper summarizes a systematic investigation of adsorption/volatilization artifacts.
