Abstract

To the Editor: Reuler et al. (April 18 issue)1 conclude from several studies2,3 that fortification of alcoholic beverages with thiamine would lower health care costs because it would prevent Wernicke's encephalopathy and reduce the prevalence of Korsakoff's psychosis. Yet, they say, “these recommendations have not yet been implemented by the [alcoholic] beverage industry.” The question of the fortification of beer with thiamine has been examined by my company.4 We concluded that there is no technical objection to fortification at rates of 0.3 or 0.5 mg per liter, but that the use of thiamine chloride at 7.5 mg per liter.
