Abstract
There has been wide-spread disagreement about the effect of radiation in malignant melanoma. Therefore, the value of orthovoltage X-ray therapy to the eye of hamsters inoculated with five strains of malignant melanoma has been tested in controlled experiments. Tumor size and survival time were measured. X-ray therapy retarded melanoma growth at times. With some cell lines, X-ray therapy appeared to prolong hamster survival; with others, it did not. Neither X-ray therapy nor surgical enucleation of the eye appeared to be clearly superior.
