Abstract
Process models for describing NPE buildup in pulp washers require equilibrium models for metal ion partitioning. The adsorption of metal ions onto wood pulp was modeled as a multi-component ion exchange process onto carboxylic acid groups of pulp. The model predicted the equilibrium distribution of sodium and calcium ions on wood pulp as a function of pH from 2 to 10 and metal ion concentrations up to 4 mM.
