Abstract

Amblyopia is a disorder of vision that originates in infants and young children and is defined as reduced visual acuity in the presence of optimal refractive correction and absence of eye and visual system abnormalities. Amblyopia is divided into three subtypes: strabismic, refractive, and deprivation. Effective treatment must be initiated during the ages that the visual system is immature (usually within the first decade). Treatment consists of providing a clear retinal image for the amblyopic eye and/or occlusion or penalization of the dominant eye to force use of the amblyopic eye.
