Abstract
Currently, over 140,000 weight-loss or “bariatric” surgical procedures are performed each year in the United States (1). Surgery is considered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to be the weight-loss treatment of choice for appropriately selected individuals who are severely obese (2). Surgical treatment of obesity is routinely associated with loss of greater than 100 lb. Hence, it is not surprising that patients who undergo such operations can have substantial amelioration of comorbid conditions because such improvements can be seen with losing as little as 15 to 20 lb.
