Abstract

This study looked for asymptomatic functional abnormalities in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Spirometry and carbon monoxide diffusion (D_LCO) were performed on 27 female patients. Thirteen patients had defects in at least one parameter, the commonest being reduced D_LCO. This was followed by abnormalities in peak expiratory rate, forced expiratory flow between 25%-75% of forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. There was no correlation between disease activity, disease duration, therapy or serological abnormalities and spirometric defects. Lung involvement in SLE was frequent but mild in most cases.
