Abstract
The pathogenesis, natural course, and optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approach for premalignant and early malignant lesions of the periampullary region and extrahepatic biliary tree remain under debate. Their typically aggressive biology mandates an early and accurate diagnosis of these lesions. In this chapter, we describe important clinical features and the role and limitations of endoscopic modalities including direct inspection, tissue sampling, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Future advances in EUS and ERCP may augment their role in early diagnosis and treatment of malignant and premalignant lesions of extrahepatic biliary tree. This edition first published 2013
