Abstract

We present a new real-time indoor mobility assessment and location tracking system designed for long-term monitoring of patient health within a home or health-care setting. The system is being designed as a collaboration between EmbedRF LLC and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and is comprised of (1) a patient-worn tag mounted on the wrist, ankle or belt, (2) a number of access points positioned around the home or health-care building that communicate wirelessly with each other and with the tag, (3) a hub that consists of an access point connected to a laptop computer, used to wirelessly communicate with the tag and access points, aggregate the information and perform the tracking and mobility assessment algorithm, and finally (4) a web server that receives information from the hub and sends notification and alarm messages to health care professionals to provide real-time tracking and to indicate the patient health status. The system is capable of operating in two modes: a tag-based multi-patient mobility assessment mode in which the tag is worn by the patient(s), and a tag-free single-patient tracking mode that requires zero compliance by the patient.
