Abstract
We propose five steps to the successful endoscopic management of ingested FBs. First, perform a thorough preprocedure assessment, particularly to evaluate for FB-related complications. Second, identify retrieval devices that may be useful during the endoscopy. Next, practice grasping the FB outside of the patient using a similar object. During endoscopy, take a stepwise approach to identify the object, securely grasping it, and removing the FB with the endoscope simultaneously. When applicable, consider postprocedure follow-up to assure mucosal healing and evaluate for underlying diseases. For the successful management of FB ingestions, the physician should make every effort to anticipate the potential challenges associated with endoscopic retrieval. Given the potential for severe complications, no case of FB retrieval should be considered routine.
