Abstract
The understanding of the underlying chemistry of free radical catalysis by galactose oxidase has greatly increased in recent years. The combined structural, spectroscopic, and biochemical work has advanced the mechanistic insights into this remarkable metalloradical active site. Galactose oxidase is emerging as one of the best-characterized of the free radical enzymes, and the fundamental principles of free radical catalysis that are being revealed in detailed studies on galactose and other radical-copper oxidases may be expected to contribute to a better understanding of free radical mechanisms in other enzymes.
