Abstract

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have unique healthcare needs. In order to provide competent care, providers must be knowledgeable about the trauma and discrimination TGD community has faced, and how to provide an inclusive and affirming healthcare environment. More specifically, gynecologic and urologic providers should be familiar with how to perform a genitourinary exam using trauma-informed care principles, and unique genitourinary healthcare concerns that may prompt TGD individuals to seek care. This may include general reproductive and/or urinary care/maintenance and pelvic health maintenance or management of surgical complications after genital gender-affirming surgery (GGAS). We provide an overview of the principles of gender-affirming care, including hormonal and surgical interventions, and common complications after GGAS.
