Abstract

Long-term depression (LTD) of excitatory synaptic transmission represents a mechanism by which synapses can undergo an activity-dependent weakening of their strength. There are at least two broad classes of LTD, distinguished by the glutamate receptor that is required for LTD induction, which may be either of the NMDA (NMDAR) or metabotropic (mGluR) type. For this article we therefore distinguish NMDAR-LTD from mGluR-LTD and present contrasting properties for their induction, expression, and maintenance.
