Abstract

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infection prevalent in particular geographic regions of the northern hemisphere. Although it does not have a high case fatality rate, it does place a significant burden on the health and economic vitality of populations in endemic areas. Recent advances in understanding the diversity of disease manifestations and the causative agents, which consist of some members of the bacterial genus Borrelia, contribute to understanding the complexity of this infectious disease.
