Myocardial contrast echocardiography: Current status and future prospects

Two-dimensional echocardiography with myocardial contrast enhancement by intravascular injection of air microbubbles has been used to assess myocardial perfusion in patients in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and operating room. Development of better and more stable microbubbles, optimal two-dimensional echocardiographic systems, and digital image-enhancement techniques should lead to the ability to opacify myocardium after venous contrast injection, allowing broadened application of this investigational technique.
