Abstract

DEFINITION AND EPIDEMIOLOGY Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal (GI) emergency of the premature neonate. NEC is an acute inflammatory state of the intestine which affects all layers of the intestinal wall (28.1). This inflammation can range from a mild, focal area of involvement of the small intestine 28.2 28.328.1 Severe necrotizing enterocolitis with intramural gas (arrows) as well as mucosal and submucosal necrosis.
