The variety of disorders that cause upper extremity arterial obstruction can be usefully divided into large and small artery diseases. History, including the presence or absence of digital cold intolerance, and physical examination suggest the diagnosis. A number of specialized techniques are available to diagnose cold-induced digital vasospasm. Appropriate noninvasive vascular examinations, using Doppler segmental pressure measurement, digital plethysmography, and duplex scanning, can locate the site of obstruction and often, its nature.
