Obesity in Pregnancy Complications and Outcomes

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Obesity is a metabolically complex and heterogeneous condition. Persons with obesity have higher rates of subfertility and adverse perinatal outcomes. Offspring born to persons with obesity have higher risks for long-term health consequences, increasing the transgenerational cycle and risks for obesity. Prepregnancy and interpregnancy health interventions and weight optimization have been shown to reduce perinatal risks. Pregnancy is a motivating period that providers can use to promote healthy dietary patterns and lifelong, sustainable lifestyle modifications and behaviors that can benefit family health and reduce the transgenerational burden of obesity.
