Ovarian Reserve Testing

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Ovarian reserve refers to the number of oocytes remaining in the ovary or oocyte quantity. Ovarian reserve markers include day 3 FSH and estradiol levels, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), and antral follicle count (AFC). Ovarian reserve testing is often part of the female infertility evaluation especially in older women. These markers are useful as predictors of ovarian response to gonadotropin stimulation during IVF and can be used to counsel patients and to tailor individual treatment strategies. Ovarian reserve markers are generally poor predictors of reproductive potential, independent of age, and should not be used to screen for infertility in the general population. Female age is the single most important predictor of fecundity.
